Development Worker Groups

SLECG currently run 2 Development Workers Groups, one for men and one for women. Co-ordinators oversee the running of both projects.

Women's Development Worker Group

The group meets three times a week and offers varied activities such as healthy cooking, exercise and swimming. They arrange a number of outings throughout the year to places like Blackpool, Bradford and the Golden Acre Park. They also organise consultations on wide variety of subjects, including housing and maternity services.

Men's Development Worker Group

The men's group aims to offer a varied and beneficial programme of activities and services to cater for Asian men in South Leeds. These include a luncheon club, light exercise 2 days a week, sauna and swimming once a week and sessions for chiropody. They also provide English and Aromatherapy classes arranged by Joseph Priestly College. They also arrange a number of trips to places like Scarborough, Wales and Temple Newsam.

Personal Safety Project

Funded by The Lankelly Foundation over a three year period, the personal safety project is to:

  • To promote personal safety and community needs of the ethnic minority communities in South Leeds.
  • To explore and address environmental and domestic factors that contribute to increasing levels of fear about people leaving their homes.
Working alongside other agencies the project has in the first year concentrated on three particular themes:
  1. Safety Within The Home: Assistance has been provided to a number of clients with:
    • Security Locks
    • Security Chains
    • Security Grills
    • Smoke Alarms
    • Minor Repairs
  2. Personal Safety:
  3. This aspect of the project has examined and attempted to tackle:
    • Racial Abuse
    • Anti Social Behaviour
    • Physical and/or verbal abuse
  4. Falls Reduction
    • In partnership with Care and Repair the falls reduction project undertakes home visits to assess the risk of elderly people falling within their own home. The assessment examines; loose carpets, floor boards, layout of the house and other potential risk factors.

Events/Talks

An integral aspect of the project is the facilitation of talks and events related to safety issues where information and advice can be disseminated in the relevant community languages. Already we have provided talks on; carbon monoxide poisoning, fire prevention, crime prevention and smoke alarms.
